I have just been reminded that not everyone in the world speaks the same langauge that we do.

I have just asked a colleague "what's your Kibble?" when talking about the Spain match this afternoon. For some reason they did not know what I meant.

Although pleasingly, my mother uses the verb "to Kibble" when talking about horse racing.

Allow me to send you a post-card from history...

Dear Colonel BT Mahon,

Wish you were here!

Yours,
The beseiged of Mafeking - 15th May 1900.

...and now allow me to tell you how "The Kibble" came into being (Mrs K you may want to cover your eyes - Alan may well have not told you the grizzly truth about his conception).

The name "Kibble" and indeed "Alan Kibble" derives from a gentleman of Dyer, Fitz and Armit's aquaintance at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School. He worked I believe in the finance department. His name gained currency with Dyer (and then through us as is the way of these things) because it was considered that - despite never having done so - he sounded like someone who played in the excellent Everton team of the mid eighties.

Therefore when playing table football (or 'Twisty-Pole' as it is properly called), which we were doing a great deal at that time, as the blue team it was common to exclaim "Kibble!" in tones approximating the late Brian Moore as one of the cerulian clad players struck the ball goalwards.

I remember one saturday lunchtime in the boosh as we were recovering from our friday night sing-song hangovers (with the aid of some ice-cold R.Whites lemonade and Table Tennis on Grandstand if memory serves) it was mooted that we should devise a game based on predicting that day's footy scores - a crude early version of the kibble we now know but differing in certain details, much as how the brutal "football" matches between neighbouring villages became the prancing nancy-ball of the premiership - and naturally when giving it a name we plumped for "The Alan Kibble Cup" (a bottle of moderate australian red wine served as the trophy). I think Badger was the first winner.

The rest of course is history (as was all of the above) obviously.

Makes you feel proud don't it?

Wow! A comprehensive Kibble history! It made me a little moist around the gills.

I don't remember being the first ever winner. But I will take it. A kind of spazzy westcountry Uruguay.
