What, strictly speaking is the difference?

I'd genuinely like to know.

A cup always comes with a saucer whereas a mug is someone who thinks North Korea will draw 0-0 with Brazil.

Its all about a handles.

If you can comfortably get all 3 or 4 of your fingers in the handle = MUG.

Any less than 3 you are in cup territority.

What about the FA Cup or the World Cup for that matter? Do they come with a saucer? Hmmm? Do they? Mr not-top-of-all-the tables?

The rule clearly applies to the drinking-type-of-cup not the shiny tournament variety. I think that would need a different rule, Mr-prematurely-(-in-more-ways-than-one)-top-of-the-table.

I'm playing the long game, not a gratifyingly short and successful one.

Haa!

The old Division One trophy used to have a base, didn't it. So does the FA Cup. Um... not quite... a saucer. No. No.

What about the Skol Cup? That had a "saucer" for sure.

Err... the Makita International Tournament?

Oh, where's Sowton when you need him...

I would say the difference between a cup and a mug can be boiled down to three salient details:

Prestige: 'Cup' has a higher prestige value than 'mug', as demonstrated by the etymology of the two words. 'Cup' comes from Late Latin whereas 'mug' is Scandinavian in origin.

Size: A mug can holds, on average, 15-20% more liquid than a cup.

Shape: Cups taper outwards and can, as Mrs Kibble's fine collection indicates, have an array of detail and irregularities, whereas mugs tend to be regular cylinders.

You are all wrong. Just apply both types of drinking vestle as a verb (past tense) in the following sentence:

I turned round and he _________ed my testicles.

That clearly illustrates the difference in my opinion.

My dear Koupaphiles

Mugs are not as good as cups. Fact. Otherwise there is no significant difference.

I hope that clarifies things,

All my best of happy regards,

I enjoyed this thread so much, I'm going to do a cross-stitch of the whole thing and hang it on my wall.

There, I said it.
